Background of the Study

With the growth of digital financial services in Nigeria, particularly among fintech companies, consumer data privacy and security have become major concerns. As these firms collect vast amounts of sensitive personal and financial data, the risk of data breaches and misuse increases. Consumer trust is a critical factor in the success of fintech companies, and thus, ensuring data privacy and security is essential for maintaining this trust (Ojo & Ibrahim, 2024).

In Zamfara State, where the fintech sector is rapidly expanding, businesses face numerous challenges in safeguarding customer data. This study investigates the consumer data privacy and security challenges faced by fintech firms in Zamfara State, with a focus on identifying the factors that affect data protection practices and consumer trust.

Statement of the Problem

The rise of cyberattacks and data breaches has significantly undermined consumer confidence in the fintech sector in Nigeria. In Zamfara State, fintech firms face unique challenges in implementing robust data privacy and security measures due to factors such as inadequate regulatory frameworks, limited resources, and a lack of skilled professionals (Garba & Yusuf, 2025).

While global research highlights the importance of consumer data privacy, there is limited focus on the specific challenges faced by Nigerian fintech firms, particularly in rural or less-developed areas like Zamfara State. This study seeks to fill this gap by examining the data privacy and security issues in these firms and proposing strategies for improvement.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the consumer data privacy and security challenges faced by fintech firms in Zamfara State.

  2. To analyze the impact of these challenges on consumer trust and business performance.

  3. To propose solutions to enhance data privacy and security practices in fintech firms.

Research Questions

  1. What are the major consumer data privacy and security challenges faced by fintech firms in Zamfara State?

  2. How do these challenges affect consumer trust in fintech services?

  3. What strategies can fintech firms implement to improve data privacy and security practices?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Consumer data privacy and security challenges have no significant impact on consumer trust in fintech firms.

  2. Fintech firms in Zamfara State do not significantly invest in data privacy and security measures.

  3. Strategies for improving data privacy and security have no significant effect on consumer trust or business performance.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on fintech firms operating in Zamfara State, with a particular emphasis on data privacy and security issues. Limitations include the reluctance of firms to share sensitive data, variability in regulatory practices, and the fast-changing nature of cybersecurity threats.
